Short History of Viagra Discovery, Success and Alternatives

Short History of Viagra Discovery

While millions of people all over the world take Viagra, or one of its many alternatives, lots of them don’t really know anything about Viagra short history. But it has veryΒ interesting and surprising background!

So, to help you understand more about where your Viagra came from, here’s a short history of Viagra, covering everything from its discovery, through to the appearance of alternatives on the market.

Viagra History and Discovery

The story of the discovery of Viagra is not what you might think. The drug, actually called Sildenafil (or compound UK-92,480), was synthesised in the mid-1990s by a group of research scientists working at a research laboratory run by Pfizer, one of the world’s largest global pharmaceutical corporations. However, they were not seeking to develop a drug to solve erectile dysfunction, but one that could be used to treat heart problems like angina and hypertension.

When undergoing standard tests, however, the group of scientists found that the drug did little to solve any of these issues; it did, however, cause erections in the presumably rather embarrassed test subjects.

As a result, Sildenafil was then chosen to be marketed as a drug for erectile dysfunction, and was patented by the company in 1996, and then approved for use by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998.

Marketing and Success

After it was approved by the FDA in 1998, Viagra soon appeared on the market, and was a huge success. By the year 2000, Viagra accounted for a 92% market share of drugs for erectile dysfunction worldwide, a percentage that increased with the announcement that it could be sold over the counter in pharmacies in the UK, as well as online in America and across the world.

The fact that you could buy Viagra online after a short web consultation greatly increased the sales of the drug, and it still sells strongly across the world to this day, almost 20 years after it was put on the market.

Viagra Alternatives

In recent years, a number of new alternatives to Viagra have appeared on the market, including Cialis (Tadalafil) and Levitra (Vardenafil). In addition, you can now buy generic versions of these alternatives, and of Viagra itself, for a far lower price, without compromising on the quality of the drug.
